Rietvlei Dam is situated to the south east of Pretoria therefore ideally situated within easy reach of people living in Gauteng. The reserve has been in existence for a long time and numerous activities have been added during this time, which include hiking, game drives and camping.

The reserve offers a 10km (4 hour) day walk (10-15 people) and a 21km (2 day) overnight hike (6-8 people). Starting friday afternoon and ending sunday afternoon. Facilities include two overnight huts with beds, mattresses, hot/cold water, limited cooking utensils and firewood. The route has a number of historical structures such as British embankments used during the occupation of Pretoria.

Game species that can be found in the reserve are: Rhino, Buffalo, Hippo, Cheetah, Eland, Red Hartebeest, Black Wildebeest, Zebra, Ostrich, Blesbok, Springbok, Reedbok, Waterbuck, Steenbok, Duiker, Oribi, Jackal, Hyaena etc
